Silent Film Production

As part of studying German Expressionism and 'Sunrise' we were asked to make a 1-2 minute silent film using some of the stylisation of German Expressionism.

Evaluation:
Our film generally turned out well. We implemented some of the key stylisation such as use of canted angles, overacting, deep shadow and text to convey speech. However, the narrative itself got a little lost as one of the sequences we tried to film had not saved. To improve I think the use of superimposition and perhaps more playing with shadow would work to our advantage. Instead of simply having someone walking along, superimposing another, more sinister, character alongside would help to build tension. I think we effectively used symbolism with the ducks and the squirrel showing the false sense of security maintained by everyday individuals to later be disrupted. We took on more expressionist elements by speeding the chase scene up slightly and added an almost Chaplin-esque satirical comedy through the music. Overall I feel we had a clear narrative an the comedy was well received. We also incorporated the stylisation of German Expressive cinema.
